About

What is VLE (Virtual Learning Environment?)

A cloud-based, open standard Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) enables schools to integrate and manage teaching, learning, assessment, collaboration, feedback and learning data analysis holistically, so as to implement and deepen eLearning.

Why VLE?

As an essential component of innovative learning, VLE brings benefits to school leaders, school administrators, teachers and students.

For School leaders

Student profile management

  • While students complete learning activities (e.g. assignments, assessment and collaboration) and gain feedback, their progress and learning data are systematically recorded by the system for the school’s analysis and reference

Teaching resources depository

  • Materials developed by teachers through the years could be kept safe in one portal, thus schools can create and manage courses and contents  systematically for implementing eLearning in the whole school

Eco-friendly school

  • Teaching materials turn digitalised and paperless, and take up less physical space

For School administrators

Single platform and single sign-on management

  • The platform enables teachers create materials and add third party apps / materials, thus administrators could save time in setting up and managing accounts for numerous platforms. The logistics of account management is also supported by EdCity

Cloud-based

  • The platform could be accessed anytime and anywhere for easier management

For Teachers

Timesaving one-stop portal

  • Create materials on one single platform, and insert resources from other platforms

Easy resources organisation

  • Save and organise teaching mateirals over the years according to units, class or subjects

Flexible import and export of resources

  • EdCity adopts an open standard VLE system that enables teachers to import / export resources from various sources (e.g. materials developed by other teachers and third party apps / materials), and brings benefits for teaching in the long run

For Students

Unified user experience

  • Only need to learn about the operation of one single platform instead of many in the past

Learning progress tracking

  • Get a clear picture of their learning progress through learning data analysis

Self/collaborative learning channels

  • The platform allows different activities which can cater to different styles of learning

Multi-sensory experience learning experience

  • The platform allows teachers and students to communicate via text, images, film clips and even recordings. EdCity also provides exclusive text-to-speech function on the platform.

Learn anytime, anywhere

  • Start learning anytime and anywhere with their computers or mobile devices

Development

EdCity has launched the 'VLE Pilot Scheme' and 'VLE for Flipped Classroom' service in 2016. The vision was to build a standardised learning environment by introducing an open, standardised eLearning platform (Virtual Learning Environment, also known as VLE) to the education sector of Hong Kong.  The 'VLE for Flipped Classroom' service aimed at supporting teachers in Hong Kong to flip their classroom. EdCity provided support in account management and devoted in building the resrouces depository on VLE. The 'VLE Pilot Scheme' encouraged the adoption of VLE on a whole-school level, to deepen the effectiveness of elearning.

As the 'VLE Pilot Scheme' and 'VLE for Flipped Classroom' service mature, EdCity launched the new 'VLE Scheme' in Dec 2018 as the consolidation of both. On the one hand, the 'VLE Scheme' supports teachers in using VLE in their learning, teaching and feedback/assessment cycle, and flexibly use the platform for different pedagogies such as flipped classroom, collaborative learning and mastery learning, etc. On the other hand, the 'VLE Scheme' continues to support schools to progressively deepen the adoption of VLE according to their vision, and promoting innovative learning in the long run. The scheme will share best practices in the community and bring forward the experiences for the benefits of more schools in Hong Kong.

Goals

VLE Pilot Scheme is organised by Hong Kong Education City (EdCity). Since 2016, the Scheme provides a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) for schools, with the following objectives:

  • Build a standardised learning environment by introducing an open, standardised eLearning platform to the education sector in Hong Kong;
  • Enable schools to experience a latest cloud based, open standard VLE system for integrating and managing teaching, learning, assessment, collaboration, feedback and learning data analysis holistically;
  • Enable schools to use third party apps, systems, assessment and teaching resources that are standardised and compatible with others;
  • Share eLearning practices among schools;
  • Facilitate longer term planning for Hong Kong’s education; and
  • Ultimately, the Scheme aims at implementing and deepening eLearning for the whole school. During the scheme period, the VLE is provided to participating schools for free use by teachers, staff and students.

EdCity reserves the right to change the details of the Scheme.
