CanTone App

CanTone App is an AI-powered Cantonese learning application specially designed for non-Chinese speaking (NCS) and ethnic minority (EM) learners in Hong Kong. It is free to download and use, and offers supporting courses as well as customizable content features. The app supports four ethnic minority languages — English, Urdu, Nepali, and Hindi — making it accessible and user-friendly for learners from diverse backgrounds. Since 2023, our AI Cantonese Learning App has received excellent feedback directly from the EM community. Through close collaboration with over 40 NGOs and schools, we have successfully organised more than 170 Cantonese learning events. Leveraging advanced artificial intelligence, CanTone App provides learners with basic daily Cantonese vocabulary, pronunciation practice, and listening exercises, enabling them to learn comfortably at home. In addition, the app features real-time pronunciation accuracy feedback and highly realistic AI-simulated daily conversations. Users can practice various real-life scenarios such as shopping, workplace communication, and social interactions, helping them speak Cantonese with confidence, overcome language barriers, increase social participation, and better integrate into Hong Kong’s multicultural society. Upcoming enhancements include adding more industry-specific vocational Cantonese content tailored for job seekers, equipping EM adults with the practical language skills needed for employment and career advancement in Hong Kong.
